Peter Garrett Biography
Peter Garrett (born 1953 in Sydney) is the current national president of the Australian Conservation Foundation, activist, and former frontman of Midnight Oil. He left the band in December of 2002 after twenty-nine years with them to focus more fully on his environmental and social activism.

Peter Garrett (oil painting)Garrett has worked with several environmental organisations. He served as president for the Australian Conservation Foundation from 1989 to 1993 and in 1998 began another term as president. He also joined the International Board of Greenpeace in 1993 for a two year term. Garrett serves as adviser and patron to various cultural and community organizations including Jubilee Debt Relief and was a founding member of the Surfrider Foundation.

In 2000 he was awarded the Australian Humanitarian Foundation Award in the Environment category and in 2001 he received an honorary Doctorate of Letters by the University of New South Wales.

Garret was briefly involved in the Australian political scene. As the founding leader of the Nuclear Disarmament Party, he contested a Senate seat for New South Wales in 1985. He needed 12.5 percent of the vote to win one of the seven seats in the multi-member constituency; he received just over 9 percent of first-preference votes, but when subsequent preferences were allocated, he narrowly failed to get the 12.5 percent required for election.

Garret announced he will recommence his involvement in Australian politics in June 2004 by contesting the Labor Party preselection for the New South Wales House of Representatives seat of Kingsford Smith. Garrett has since announced that he has become more conservative and is ready to accept ALP policy, much to the dismay of many of his fans.
