Frank O'Connor Biography |
Frank O’Connor (aka Michael O'Donovan) (1903 - March 10, 1966) was an Irish author of over 150 works, best known for his short stories.
Frank O'Connor was born Michael O'Donovan in Cork, Ireland as an only child. His father was drunk and debtridden, and he and Michael were often at odds, particularly over the abuse of his mother Minnie.
In 1918 he joined the First Brigade of the Irish Republican Army and participated in resistance to British rule. After the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 there was a civil war between Nationalists (IRA) and supporters of the treaty.
From the 1930s to the 1960s he was a prolific writer of short stories, poems, plays, and novellas. He also worked as a teacher and had other odd jobs.
He had a stroke while teaching at Stanford in 1961, and later died in Dublin, Ireland in 1966.
Many of O'Connor's writings were based on his own life and life experiences - his character Larry Delaney in particular.
